Prekmurje

prekmurje01Prekmurje, named after River Mura, that literally separates it from the rest of the country, is the region on the north-east of Slovenia which is part of the Pannonian Plains. It is defined by slow, meandering river Mura and wine growing hills, dotted with weekend cottages and wine cellars. To the north the plain is bordered by the hills of Goričko, and to the south by the hills of Slovenske gorice. Pannonian sea left very fertile soil and underneath there's rich thermal water supply.

prekmurje02Region that has been much influenced by the Hungarians is still home to Hungarian minority. A typical image of Prekmurje is a stork. This long-legged bird that migrates during the year makes its nests on chimneys or telephone poles. Not that much time ago, there were numerous floating mills on the Mura River. Out of many only Babič Mill is preserved in the village Veržej. The capital city of the region is Murska Sobota.

The region is known also for its distinctive cuisine. Among traditional dishes, the best known are pork, turnip and millet casserole called bujta repa. Prekmurje also boasts with one of the world's great cakes, layered pastry called Prekmurska gibanica,
